Taliwas River Conservation Area
Located near the east coast of Sabah, 36km from Lahad Datu town, Taliwas River Conservation Area was originally a project site set up in 1970 by Sabah Forestry Department for enrichment planting of logged forest around Taliwas. Today, TRCA is a perfect place for visitors to experience a pleasurable nature recreation, with its unique flora vegetation, beautiful serene lake and crystal-clear water. TRCA also offers the chance to sight wildlife such as birds, mammals and reptiles.

Taliwas River Conservation Area (TRCA) is a Class 1 (Protection) Forest Reserve with a total area of 9,546 hectares of unique ultramafic and lowland forest near the southeast coast of Sabah in the district of Lahad Datu.  TRCA is located 36km from the Lahad Datu town and 45km from the eastern part of the Danum Valley Conversation Area.  TRCA having a unique flora vegetation, beautiful serene lake and crystal-clear water, makes its a perfect place for visitors to experience a pleasurable nature recreation.  TRCA also offers the chance to sight wildlife such as birds, mammals and reptiles as well as discovery of unique plants around the area.


Under the management of Yayasan Sabah Group, the Taliwas River Studies Centre has developed significantly.  To optimize TRCA as a conservation area and the use of the Studies Centre as a destination for training and education, activities integrated with recreation and eco-tourism initiatives, as follows:

  • To serve as conservation of gene bank for biodiversity.
  • To provide facilities and services for nature recreational activities for the public, adopting an outdoor family recreation concept.
  • To provide a venue for nature and environmental education activities for school children, uniformed groups and others including Sabah Nature Club's orientation courses.


WHAT CAN YOU DO IN TRCA?
  • Take a leisurely walk and explore the two most visited waterfalls in TRCA, the Taliwas waterfall and Vanilla waterfall.
  • Visitors will also have the real camping experience with nature's air conditioning at night and waking up to the sound of gibbons in the morning.
  • Gear up for a thrilling cycling activity around the Taliwas River Studies Centre.  A great additional activity to do with friends and family.
  • Take a refreshing dip in the cool and clear water of Taliwas River while listening to the soothing sounds of the forest around you.
  • Get the chance of spotting a variety of colourful birds around TRCA guided by our rangers.
  • With its easily trekked and children friendly trails and necessary recreation facilities, makes TRCA a perfect destination for a family vacation.
  • TRCA also provide facilities and venue for environmental education programs and team building for school, uniformed group and others.


HOW TO GET THERE?

Visitors should obtain a vehicle permit at the Danum Valley office located in the Fajar town, Lahad Datu.  TRCA is accessible by air to Lahad Datu Airport from Kota Kinabalu or by road via Tawau or Sandakan.  It takes approximately 50 minutes drive to reach TRSC from Lahad Datu.
